Default Stereo Question.

Do you think this will fit okay in an 89 XJ. I'm just looking to get a cheap radio because I don't have the money for a nice one right now. On eBay they have this radio and ones similar from $14-$26. But I don't want to start cutting up the plastic to make it fit. Also if it does fit does it come with what I need to hook it up.

You should buy a install kit its about 20 bucks come with a din adapter piece and wearing plugs that you can splice in to not your stock wiring.

So this plus the radio should work?

I scored a nearly perfect Pioneer Premier head unit, with wiring, accessories, etc. for $35 on Ebay a while back.

Patience is key -- and look for auctions ending on Monday morning because no one bids on those. The one you posted doesn't look horrible, but it probably is really bad in reality. I had a Dual head unit that wasn't even that "low end", but the used Pioneer unit I replaced it with sounds easily 3 times better for some reason.

But at the end of the day, the one you posted will work as long as you get the proper harness adapter, and a standard Chrysler to single-DIN bracket.

This is the radio bracket;

First thank you, that was really helpful. I guess I overlooked it was 97-01.

This kit does not say what years. It just says select jeep. Does it look like it will fit to you? You clearly know way more than me. I sent them a message asking what years and jeep model but I don't always trust sellers, so I'm just wanting your input.

I know you might say just buy the kit for $20-25 bucks but I'm really trying to go as cheap as possible. Money is really tight.

No need for an install kit on an 89, 96 and older XJs are standard single-din, just take the brackets off the stock radio (if you have it) or make some out of sheet metal. I tried two of those cheap plastic install kits, one fit poorly and the other snapped off the mounting "ears" in a couple months, a couple brackets I bent up from 20ga. (didn't have the factory radio) were better then either of them.

Definitely get the harness adaptor though, that makes things a lot easier, though being an 89 I'm not sure if it would have Chrysler wiring/connectors yet or still have the old AMC ones.

I still have the original radio. I guess I can just order the radio and try your idea. If it doesn't work I'll order a bracket.

Do it right or don't do it at all is my motto. If you want to do it as cheap as possible, there's nothing cheaper than doing nothing at all.

Yeah I hate "half azzed" myself but on something like a radio I'm fine with it lasting a year or whatever and not being best quality. Now if it was something important like a fuel pump or important part I would not "half azz" it.

If I had the money I would put a great radio and speakers but I really don't so I'm just doing what I canto get some old country tunes.

Default Stereo Question.

Right, so do a cheap stereo if you want, but don't slack on the wiring and mounting adapters. As long as the adaptation and installation is done right the first time, next time will be easier and you won't have to redo anything.

I'll agree on the wiring, but only the mounting adaptors if you have a non-standard opening (as is the case on 97-01 XJs), but if you are replacing a standard 1-DIN factory radio (as is the case in 96 and older XJs) with a standard 1-din aftermarket radio the factory metal brackets or metal "L" brackets you make or buy are a lot more solid than a plastic "mounting kit".

Personally, I would go to crutchfield.com and find out what the required dimensions are for your particular vehicle. Then find out what the stats are on the unit you are interested in. Then go from there. You will know if it will fit or not.
