Unhappy Steering column locks but unlocks spontaneously

Hello all,

I live in BC and have a Grand Jeep Cherokee. Up until this year I really hadn't had any issues with it. Unfortuantely, this fall this has changed.
I have seen variations on this problem but nothing exactly like mine. My 2000 Grand Jeep Cherokee has recently developed the seemingly quite common locking steering column problem. The twist that I haven't seen anywhere is that my steering column spontaneously unlocks after a period of time has passed. The first time it happened, I think I may have loosening by twisting as I had been yanking on it. But the next time it happened I just had the car towed home and it started the next day. The third time I just left it and came back about 3 hours later and it started. No yanking involved. The fourth time, it took 5 hours and I been working at twisting but was not touching it when it finally loosened so I don't know if it was the twisting or the time that loosened it. I was susicious about an anti-theft device but can't find anything regarding this in my manual. If anyone has any ideas, I would sure appreciate it. I am hesitant to call the dealer as I have visions of spending a lot of diagnostic money and still not having a solution.
