I wonder if anyone has ever mounted a spare tire on the back of a cherokee XJ tailgate. I have a 98' XJ and i hate my tire in the back it makes so much squeeking noise and it takes up room. Im wanting to mount it on my tailate but wonder if i can get struts to lift the gate and the tire?

why not just get a swing away tire carrier or a fold down tire carrier for the hitch

I use a softball/baseball bat to hold my lift gate up cause my lift gate shocks are shot. Just sayin

I was thinking about this today. The next time I see a libby at the jy I'm going to remove the spare tire holder and brace in the tail gate.

I will see if this will work.

Iv thought of the idea awhile ago, I was gonna get a spare tire carrier from a wragler or liberty and mount it on the hatch. But it isnt as simple as just bolting it on. You need to brace the crap outa the hatch as the steel (97+) (84-96 fiberglass) isnt very thick. Not only that but ur gonna have to mod some struts to fit to be able to lift the hatch (if you can evn find any)

Cleaner look? I think a swing out tire carrier is pretty clean looking and detours is as clean as it gets and it gives a factory look

Yea thats pretty nice, not my favorite tho, not a fan of tube style bumpers (unless its a front prerunner) and I woulda I think the tires mounted a bit to high

I like how its mounted high. Follows the angle of the rear glass. Just my opinion.
