something that will make u cry
so when they recycle these cars they purposely blow good engines?? do they get pleasure out of this? this made me sick. thats so sad.
A. precious engines shouldnt be purposely destroyed
B. WASTE OF FUEL! omg the govt calls themself pushing us greener but burning up all kinds of fuel just to blow engines to be recycled...come on.
so if im wrong on any of this correct me but this is stupid and wasteful and painful to these poor jeeps. ill give it that engine was tough as ****. man let me tell u...i BABY mine. oil change every 3000 ON the dot. never rawhide it. never dog it. we just fly 2gether. good gas and all. been puttin shell in it for almost a year now. got that hydrogen infused care goin in it.
and omg...i just wanna cry this is mean. =/
ok im sorry im just so disturbed. me n my jeep are "tight". sounds crazy but i take care of it and it takes care of me i love my jeep.

i think the "waste of fuel" gripe is kinda grasping at straws a little there
but your right about everything else, its complete BS
Theyre worried about the enviroment, how about all the smoke that all these engines blowing up are causing and then the coolant all over the place when they blow up. I just saw a 94 GC with 5.2 blow up when there was nothing wrong with it at all. Its one stoopid program and in 5 months all these new cars will be repo'd and then they wont have a car.
man, some of you guys are acting like the government is sending out death squads to blow up your jeeps... this thing is voluntary. you like your jeep, keep it! if its worth more than $4500 to you, then nobody is telling you you have to turn it in. there are plenty of people out there who've had "clunkers" in their driveways because they werent cosmetically sellable or had some safety issue. for these people its like being given a reason to pick up something usable instead of having a stain in the driveway.. you can pick up a Hyundai Accent for $9900... with the rebate thats about $6k for a brand new car which you can get financed for 6 (6!) years!! we're talking a $50 /mo car payment here for a car with 0 miles and 100k warranty, LOL. and it aint a bad car either.
personally, i bought my jeep in february, so i dont qualify but if i did you can bet your *** id be trading it for $4500 off a new commuter car which im actually in the market for. i would stand to make $4000 by trading the Heep since i bought it for $500. its a great truck and its astounding that it still runs at all w/313k and being 20 yrs old, but its it worth $4000 to me? hell no.

I work in a parts dept at a jeep dealership and I can't stand to see the nice jeeps sitting there with the word clunker on them. I think they otta auction the running vehicles off and recoup some of our tax money. This would help the people that can't afford new cars to maybe step up to something nicer. I know the ones I see out my window are nicer than my 97 ZJ.

Imagine driving buy a dealer and seeing a car nearly on fire and a bunch of guys standing around filming it for youtube......not a very positive image for the dealership.

That really pissed me off... They blew a perfectly good I6. It took them a while though lol Noticed he said (It's about time) Only a jeep can stand that abuse. But on the other hand the government is wrong for doing this. i'm gonna laugh when they have their new little cars driving around and a big jeep (FORGETS) to hit the brakes and runs over the new cars. Not only are the cars all electronics it's really hard to restore one they are pretty much disposable but you take an old jeep you put a couple things here and there and you'll have a vehicle that will last you forever. I had a 2001 eclipse and NEVER will I go back to something like that I'll keep my 89 cherokee limited over an other vehicle. I had a dealership offer me $4500 for my cherokee I laughed and he asked me what I was laughing at I told him he wanted to sell me a piece of crap Nissan for $19,000 when I had a jeep that would crush that car and last me till the day i die... He just walked back in the dealer...

You know that governement has spent over $1 Billion in the cash for clunkers thing and the government only had enough money in the budget for 250,000 cash for clunker cars. If the government can't find more funding they will have to stop the cash for clunkers rebate deal
im just still stuck on the fact that they blow them up period.
whats the point of doing that?
like really, explain the process of the Clunker Program.
or is this not the real govt clunker program we just watched (and cried!!)
and lol sorry wookie. im just very conscious about gas consumption. its so precious and the more i hear about electric this the more i worry. i love my gas engine i love my gas power and i dont wanna see it end. so i just hate them wasting it like it aint nobodys business

I assumed this was oldbummers (failed attempt) to help the big three boost sales and help them out of their slump. But the last I heard most people, like 9 out of 10, were buying imports through this program. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but that's as stupid as giving a homeless alcoholic a drink.
There's plenty of fuel efficient domestic cars.

I think that even though i breaks my heart to see what they did to that engine, look how long it took them to do it. I think that that is a testament to how powerful and long lasting jeeps really are.

concidering the government still pays 10,000.00 dollars for a stupid hammer, how on earth could they possibly think this program was the cats meow. Nothing worse to me than some un-educated new car wanna bee putting to death a usefull resource for someone else. O'bama should have opened a government junk yard, then at least they could buy a couple of $4000.00 dollar used fenders and put the money to better use!

Cash for clunkers is bs my wife tryd to trade my 92 while I was at work. But I was told told that once the car truck whatever is sold to big brother it can be stripped for salvege before it destroyed but so far no luck on that road cause there was a mint factory condition 91 at my local hyundi dealership and I was gonna strip it for body parts and the like and the program people said no I even gave them the name of the guy who I talked to and lo and behold he no longer works there. So this is just Obomas way of trashing the economy.

Lot of good points here... esp. wookie.
I'd just add a few thoughts to this discussion...
Ultimately, it doesn't matter how these cars are disabled or destroyed or disposed of. The point is that they are functional and can move a person from home to work and back. They run.
If you look at craigslist in the "wanted" section you'll see people who need a cheap clunker just for that single purpose: To get to work.
Adding a car payment to their monthly budget is bad. It negates the positive financial and social aspects of having a job.
Second... the net environmental impact of any new car, no matter how "green", is worse than that of any existing (functional) car. (A Scientific American article explains this.)
Third-- are any car companies NOT "foreign" to some degree now? Either by badge/brand lineage, management, stock market they trade on, source of parts, source of other capital, source of patents & patent licenses, or the nationality of the workforce(s)... What matters is not the badge, but where the worker's paychecks are spent. The profits taken out by the company's owners (shareholders) always have a much smaller effect than where individual employee's paychecks are sent or spent.
Anyway... it doesn't matter who gets the rebate, or the re-sale, or the parts, or the profit... that's small stuff in the big picture. The reason this program is disturbing to me is it breaks the basic intuitive rule that our grandparents knew very well: it's usually better to keep something running, rather than throw it out. Whether it's a Jeep or a toaster.

This plan failed at helping GM and Chrysler get back on their feet by selling more vehicles. Sadly, it accomplished it's secondary goal of getting thousands of older vehicles off the road. Permanently.
Nevermind that a lot of people bought vehicles they won't be able to afford.
