I'm considering adding a snorkel to my 96 GC Laredo, after an unfortunate swamping. I may or may not have gotten a little cocky after two successful runs. Any suggestions?

I call it a sub snorkel, but it does get me in deep enough and without water damage.

I would have knocked the outside ones you buy off a dozen times. So I went with it under the hood.

Homebrew for cost effectiveness (they usually don't look as good, but they're effective). A cowl snorkel will still give you an increase in air intake height, you just won't have it running up the a-pillar (see the above post for reference). There are a few threads on cowl snorkels int eh fab section.
Your other option is an ARB style which is pricey (unless you can find a good deal on ebay/CL or find a Chinese knock-off).

What happens when you have to drive it, in a raging rain storm?

Nothing. Have you ever flooded your vent area? You cant. They drain off instantaneous.

Also why I put the snorkel on the passenger side. Its protected from rain.

Rode through my first big storm this weekend. (I wondered myself actually) . Not a drop anywhere in the intake, or box.

Also when I ran the pvc into the fire wall I angled the last piece down. So if there were to be water it would have to travel uphill to get into the plumbing.

So far I love it. Should be pretty water tight up to almost 4ft. and I really don't want to drive through water over my dash.

Yes, it did. But I didn't see it was full of wet leaves and crap. It also fills up with snow and ice during winter. I like the set up. it was just driving through heavy rains (especially at highway speeds) I was wondering about.

It seems to do fine. You are right that snow can cover the top. Howevrr it still can breath from the bottom. Shouldn't be a problem. And if it is I will let everyone know.

I did one of these on my XJ over 2 years ago and never a problem. I put mine on the ds though which is where all the water comes in and still good. I have had waves break on the windshield and still good.

Def will not melt. I've had little LED pods that are a very thin plastic under my hood and never had a minutes trouble.
