Sleeper cab?
I have a 92' cherokee. Im into exploring and overnight trips. Has anyone ever removed the back seat and installed a plywood floor?
Anyone wanna help me out? Or tell me how stupid my idea is before I end up going for it.

ive thought about doing it with mine. and putting a bed/cot back there but the practicality of it when not in use is very little. cool idea though. go for it and let me know how it goes.

Yeah, my jeep isn't an everyday driver (have you seen the price of gas?). I'll start working on it. My friend has a tahoe (this is where I got the idea) and removed his rear seat and installed a solid level floor, you could still store stuff where the passenger's feet would be. Does anyone know of a tent made specifically for a 92' cherokee?

Rooftop tents are pretty common and popular in expedition style vehicles. I plan to get one myself down the road a ways.
Why not just fold the seat down and put downa sleeping pad/single person matress, sleeping bag, and pillow? That's what I currently do. I have a terma-rest pad I put inside my military sleeping bag and I'm beyond comfortable for a weekend of camping/wheeling/outdooring. It saves hacking up things in your Jeep and it stores away nicely. I put the sleeping bag only in a separate compression sack and it's about the size of a football. The thermarest I roll up and wrap a small bungee around for storage. Both fit nicely under the passenger side of the back seat after removing the almost-useless bottle jack.

coincidentally perfect
I have a 2000 Cherokee with a broken driver's seat that wasn't worth re-welding and instead modified the passenger seat's mounts and bolted that to the drivers seat position. This left Me without a passenger seat for a while.
I discovered that the rear seat bench fit into the passenger seat's void , extending from the glove box to the folded down rear seat back...at the exact same height as the cargo area. Instant bed for even the tallest, when laying with head to glovebox.

I'll get you some pictures of my set up tomorrow but my wife and I use the jeep for long distance camping trips with our dog and it's great easy and cheap. This should give you an idea . I'll answer as many questions as I can just ask away, I should probably do a build page I've done some simple inexpensive mods that make life with a Cherokee so much better. Like an interior rear door release.

First go at it with a 6 inch memory foam mattress cut to fit the back with a carpeted piece of plywood cut to slide forward with the front seats pulled all the way up. We added magnetic screens to the windows and can close the tailgate if we want it's tight for me at 6.0 but it's doable we generally sleep with the tailgate open and a screen over the back
Don't mind the wife and pup in the picture

i have done the air mattress thing. it works.
but last couple times out by myself, i used the bench/bed cushions from my tent trailer. they fit perfectly and can be stacked up to keep out of the way for other supplies.
but ideally, i take the camper now.
pulling the lower seat out will give you more headroom.

I went the roof top tent route. My wife and I are too tall to fit in the back comfortably. Here is the set up we have. A tent and an awning.

my 96 is a 2-door and I have never had a person in the back seat, and no anticipation of ever needing that feature. currently I have removed the rear seat and folded the rear seat back down I bought one of those 4x8' 1/2 thick foam "work mats" at our local farm store and cut it to fit. the flip forward 2-door seats are real handy for access but need replacing/rebuilding. I picked up set of nice later model G.C Larado seats but they don't have a flip-forward capability---and the frames don't match the floor----so thats a problem yet to be resolved but then I need new floor pans too due to rust. I think I'll name my jeep the 4WD-MoneyPitMobile.
I plan on removing the rear seat back and installing a hinged partial floor to make the floor level all the way to the back of the front seats. it will have support legs in the front and will be hinged at the rear to provide lift up to access the storage space underneath. I'll probably make it out of plywood for starters but may later make a metal one with a front flap that locks down to the floor for unobtrusive secure storage.
I use a backpack campers semi-foam/air pad and a compact 3-season sleeping bag, it and a compact 1 person tent all fit in a fabric tote bag. i also have a tightly packed HennessyHammock for when I'm camping in wooded areas.
I like those roller-shade canopies. I've seen them on the big campers and motor -homes by never one small enough to mount on a cherokee.
please post more about them how they mount, sources etc I'd love to see photos of the attachment system.
