Default Skid plate fasteners

Anyone here built their own skid plates? I'm looking to fab up a TC skid and I'm trying to figured out the best way to hold it in place. I think I've read somewhere that people have use a type of self-tapper but I've never come across one larger than a sheet metal screw. It seems like a regular bolt and nut setup would be a little difficult to install. Ideas?

You you use 3/8" self tapping if they wont be removed or you could use nutserts if they need to be removed and reinstalled on occassion.

I am planning on eventually making a transfer case skid and attatching it with bolts through the crossmember pinch seam and riv-nuts in the frame rails.

Hmm, these riv-nuts look like a good option

Do you need a special tool to install them? I have a smaller rivet gun but I don't think it would work
