showing off my ride!
This is my baby that I bought last year in July 2013 for 4,500$ a 1998 jeep Cherokee se 2wd automatic with 125,000 mi. so far I replaced the transmition, it has a new radiator and fan. 4 new all terrain tires and a new steering pump it now has 145,000 mi on it and so far I love it I beat the **** out of it! do little jumps off the curbs or drive in dirt/ grass fields uphill and drive fast. I love it! my engine started sounding weird at 143,000 mi its currently at 145,000 mi how much is my jeep worth? Would you buy it? Should I put more money into it? Its not for sale she's my baby till she's dead

Well, if it weren't for the part about weird engine noises and beating the **** out of it every chance you get, I'd say it's probably worth about what you paid for it. But, since you shared that with us, I'd estimate it's value at about $1000-$1500. Why have you waited 2,000 miles to figure out what the "weird noise" is?
I'm not opposed to driving the **** out of it but with that mentality comes the responsibility of additional maintenance and care. Have you done that?

Yes I've maintained it. somewhat like oil changes fluid changes and cleaned the air filter and make sure the tire pressure is correct. that's all I know how to do right now. Wish I had the knowledge of an offroad mechanic. but the engine noise I'm still trying to investigate I don't have money to take it to a mechanic to find out what the noise is. It sounds kinda of like a diesel when I accelerate and goes away when I let off the gas but only does it when I'm accelerating from a stop everyone says that jeeps are supposed to be like that but I dunno I still have a lot to learn I agree I need to learn how to maintain it.

It's not uncommon for the 4.0L I6 to sound a little diesely at idle but it is unusual for it to sound that way under acceleration and usually indicates there's something not right. It could be a sign of detonation which can be caused by carbon build-up in the combustion chamber that alters the compression. I recommend that if you don't have them already, you invest in a basic set of tools and start asking questions in the OEM Cherokee Tech forum. The knowledge here can turn you into an expert in no time.

I think your right about the carbon build up! Damn your amazing! I wish i had your knowledge!! I went to a friends ranch in the middle of nowhere and ran out of gas so we used the fuel from his lawn mowers and some of the gas was blue and I think it had oil in it I'm not sure. But we did use a large amount of mixed gas I was able to make it home but now that you mentioned carbon build up I think that's whats possibly making my engine sound gruff !

87 octane fuel mixed with 2-stroke oil at the typical ratio of 40:1 is reduced to 85 octane and will lose an additional 2 octane for every three weeks of storage. This will cause detonation and pre-ignition (dieseling) even in a low-compression engine and will eventually burn holes through your pistons and break stuff.
So there's that.
