I go to Silver Lake all the time with my Jeep.. I usually air down to about 10psi and just run around in 2wd unless I start to get stuck, then i pop it in 4wd. The key to backing down is making it all the way up and over the 1st time
Main thing to remember in sand is momentum and tire pressure, find what works the best for you and use it. I have had everything from mud tires, too burnout specials and have never had a problem. Can't wait for the dunes to open back up!!
TOP ADVICE - What 4.3L XJ is saying is spot on ! We use our XJ's in the mega Sand Dunes here in Dubai (UAE / Middle East) and this advise works best (for seriously deep sand). Straight ribbed tyres work best, its all about Flotation & momentum.

Im down here in So Cal and I have to agree about momentum - I've taken everything from my XJ to my stock 2wd 4runner to my old stock chevy truck 4x4 (with A/T's) and the obvious buggies and bikes... the key to sand is momentum. Airing down the tires may help, but keep it in 2wd till you start to get stuck... other than that, foot in the floor and have fun. Last thing, always stop on the start of a decent, but before actually going over... makes getting going again easier.
