Default A Sad Decision

Okay I've had my 1994 Jeep Cherokee Country for 19 years in that time it has never broke down on me away from home. Last weekend I took it in the mountains and broke the rear passenger side leaf spring , this morning I started taking it off when I realized the driver's side leaf spring rear shackle was rusted and or broken off on one side. So with both leaf springs broken the Green Machine as I call him still got me home. My question is how much undercarriage rust it's too much to restore and XJ?

I saw a picture of a Jeep for sale on Craigslist once.
The front of the leaf was in the passenger compartment in the back seat.
Going to need to see pictures like TrailerTrash said.

Don't know if you can tell from the last two pictures I took but the driver side floor boards or completely different from a passenger side they're pretty well solid the exterior of the Jeep is very solid I love that paint they used back in 94 the green it's got a few faded spots on the roof of course but other than that paint job looks good and the frame seems to be solid with my humble knowledge of metal, I'm just saying i can't see rust on the frame anywhere.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you I was supposed to been off today but I got called in. But I just don't know what I should do with the old boy at this point it still runs like a dream just not burn no oil runs like a sewing machine and like I said before he has never broken down on me away from home. Never going to sale him. If he's too far gone with rust I'm going to build a carport behind my house put hem under it I feel I owe that to him.

No problem. Most of us don't live on the forum. There's this little thing like real life that gets in the way.

That's all repairable. Folks have had worse and repaired it and kept going for many years.

How much it will cost will depend on whether or not you can weld.

The shackle is no big deal.

First thing I would do is get it outside in the driveway or yard or wherever you can do this. Get it up on jackstands, pull the wheels off, and wash the underside of the entire vehicle. Pressure washer would definitely be best but if you dont have one you can use a garden hose. Spray it in all the holes on the frame flush every corner out. You can also go to a self serve car wash and use the tire cleaner to soak everything then blast it all with high pressure soap then high pressure water to rinse it.

When it dries you can get under it and start checking with a screw driver and flashlight poking for rust. Hopefully you dont find much at all. It doesnt look bad from the pictures but its very dirty and hard to tell.

Actually I've been looking to buy a welder just for making repairs on the 94 Jeep. I've used a stick welder off and on for years at work , so I was going to get a Miller just like the one I have used. But my brother and my neighbor keep telling me I'm crazy if I don't get a Mig wire feed welder.
What would you recommend ?
