1. Shoes have probably worn a ridge inside the drum.
2. the brake drum is rusted to the flange.

Forget the block of wood.

First

Don't worry if you destroy it, it's probably trashed anywho.

With the hammer you have to tap it around in a circle then hit it hard in the middle of the circle.Most of the time that will knock a rusted drum off the axle.Did you back the adjusters off to make sure the brakes are not holding the drums on ?

I just went through this and was hitting it with every kind of air-hammer/sledge/hammer&drift/hammer for a week. Finally I was advised that I was being too kind. They told me to hose it down with PB Blaster, allow penetration time and then directly beat on it. It's all you can do because the worst of the "rust bond" is tight around the hub-hole. Wear eye protection! Strike around the edges of the face directly with a real steel hammer. Hit it hard 5 times at each of the four points on the compass. It will yield and you'll know when it does.

there is zero drag.
