Of course you can't get rust on a flat, easy to clean surface....

So I have these two pretty bad rust spots on my XJ. The first is starting in the back window panel, in the seal. And the second is in the top corner and starting to spread in the rain guard.







Here's my concern with fixing these:
I'm new to removing rust so I'm not completely sure what's involved.
With the spot in the window seal, I've heard that it's pretty hard to get a decent seal after removing it. And I really hate this one because of the rust stain dripping down.

And for the one on the corner, I don't want to cut the rain guards because I know it'll look funky if I try to re-do that....keep in mind that I'm thinking about painting the roof because there a bunch of tiny rust spots starting to surface up there.

Any help would be much appreciated

 

How does the top line of your front windshield look where the paint meets the rubber seal? If the windshield was ever removed the installer may have not properly primed the frame before putting the windshield in. (This is a pretty common cause of rust at the top of front windshields) You should probably take out the windshield as well.. Theres probably rust under that seal. A nice wire wheel will do wonders to rust spots.

You'll definitely have to take out that back glass to clean up that rust spot.

 

consider this, a little bit of leaking rain (possibly) or destructive rust eating away at your jeep... your choice. me personally id take out the windows (all of them) and re do all of those spots even if it even looks rusty a little bit. then buy new seals and put the windows back in.

 

Does the glass come right out when you pull the seal out? And is it easy to do without breaking the glass?

 

The rear glass comes out with the seal, they're what you call in the auto glass world "roped in".

THe front windshield is held on with eurathane and would be pretty difficult for you to remove on your own without breaking it..

 

So you're saying this will be expensive. lol I have a decent crack in my windshield anyways so I guess I'll get it replaced.
