Who said they're actually stronger?

I think you misread the statements, and further than that, misunderstood the concepts of the aforementioned arguments.

They're not stronger, but they're strong. The roof gutters may be an optimal location for some, but if you get into some kind of tree scratch you're going to find some permanent screw-ups to the roof of your Jeep.

At least if you screw up a roof rack crossmember, you have a chance that the crossmember will just break off of the roof rail rather than ruining the metal gutters or roof of your Jeep.

It's a compromise I'd make to keep my roof gutters safe.
