despite my distaste for them, i think it depends. They can be cosidered "off road only" like led light bars

 

The police can pull you over for just about anything they want to.

That said, your local vehicle code may or may not deem rock lights as legal. If you're going to run them on your rig, and are worried about being pulled over by having them on, don't turn them on, then, pretty straightforward.

If you want to stand out and run with them on, while on the street, expect to be looked at by them...and, FWIW, they're called rock lights for (gasp!) off road use. Just my .02

 

What are rock lights? Is that just another name for aftermarket lights.

 

They're lighting tucked up into the undercarriage in fenderwells and bumper areas, mainly to illuminate obstacles for spotters...they can help when used right. I ran some for a while, but have since removed them...don't really like to wheel at night.

 

This is an interesting question, so I did a quick search and here is just one short thing I found

Some states like California, Kansas, and Arizona, allow the use of neon underglow car lights with restrictions on a particular color and location. For instance, Arizona traffic laws only allow amber or white lights (without glare) on the side portions of a car. Kansas traffic laws allow the use of neon ground lighting on vehicles, except for flashing or red lights, or where the tube is visible.

Other states, like Michigan, do not allow the use of any color of flashing, oscillating, or rotating lights on the body of a car being driven on public highways that is not expressly required or permitted under the Michigan traffic laws, except for emergency and other vehicles.

And even some states, like South Carolina, do not allow you to have any red, blue, or flashing lights anywhere on your vehicle, whether visible or not.

So to be safe, better check with your state laws

 

I'd wager that once you're off the trail your "rock lights" then become "underglow" and you go from "cool rock crawler guy" to "vaping ricer bro."

Like said, Police can pull you over for anything they want. Some are more forgiving than others. One might tell you to turn them off, and let you go with a warning. Another might give you a ticket, even after you turn them off.

Why does one need rock lights on to begin with when driving on public roads? Unless you got your best friend tied to the front bumper holding a walkie, alerting you of any potholes youre about to smash into, turn them off. It looks stupid driving with them on. Thats ricer territory.
