Google cj7-cj5 hardtop conversion. I know it's nothing like what your planning but it will give you an idea what's possible with fiberglass and resin. If you take your time you could make almost any top fit.

Wonder how hard it would be to make an early 4runner top fit?

Well from personal experience owning a 4runner I can tell you making the 4runner top fit is gonna be wayyy more work than you want. the 4runner top is wider, a lot longer, and the rear window is in the tailgate. not the top itself. My advice would be to cut the back off, cage it, and chuck the top. Make a bikini soft top if you want but thats myadvice. Theres a guy on pirate who made his XJ top removable but the pics are nolonger there. Maybe if you PM him he can get you some pics or advice. I do vaguely remember seeing the XJ when he was working on it though.
