Hi! I am new to Jeep and 4x4's in general. I am NOT a mechanic of any kind but I was told that if I am gonna go 4 wheelin' I should carry tools in my Jeep. Can anyone tell me a list of recommended tools specific to Jeep so I don't waste my money buying an entire toolbox full of tools I will never use.

 

You must know how to use the tools too, you'll never know unless you dig in

 

I would bring every tool to do an axle shaft, driveshaft, TRE, alternator, and anything specific to your rig that you think might break. I believe those are the most common breaks on a normal day. So those are the ones I like to be prepared for.

Also, bring extras of every fluid. Coolant, PS fluid, brake fluid, oil, oil filter, possibly some gas if you feel the need. And maybe some pb blaster

 

Start with a big socket set, better too big than going back to buy lots of extra separate which will rattle around and get lost.
Make sure it has inches and mm sockets with the three sizes of ratchet and a selection of extensions. You'll also need Torx bits in there and ideally some ring/ratchet spanners (ratchet spanners are great for things like battery terminals). Get a 3ft breaker bar and a multimeter as well.
It won't do everything but you'll soon wonder how you lived without them.

 

Listen to this guy, Im also in the process of gathering up tool money, gonna buy a nice ratchet set, some pullers, torx, a nice jack, and some misc tools

Here's a simple list that will give you what you need for most situations:

• Air pressure gauge
• Allen wrenches
• Baling wire
• Crescent wrench (small & medium)
• Electrical tape & spare connectors
• Grease (or a grease gun)
• Hammer
• Nuts & bolts (assorted sizes)
• Open end/box wrenches (3/8" to 3/4")
• Pliers - standard, needle-nose and channel lock
• Pocket/utility knife
• Socket set (standard and metric, 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drives with various extensions)
• Screwdrivers (flathead and philips)

 

Keep an eye out at Sears for a sale on Craftsman Tool Sets. You can buy a small starter kit with at least 1 socket set usually 3/8" for around $100 then start buying tool every week or so till you build up a tool chest. In hand tools alone I guess I have close to 10-12,000 and another 7k in tool box's, most all Mac and Snap On this is not a lot of tools.

 

For a cheap set in the Jeep I have a Cresent Set from Costco, it is also the set I take to the JY since it is easy to carry and then I don't have to load my good tools every time I go somewhere. Then nice thing about the Cresent set is it has just about everything you need in a pinch for about $100.

No but seriously go to harbor freight and buy their mechanics 301 piece tool set. Has been great for me!!! Goes for 180 but can go on sale to 130....has everything you need!!!

 

A ton of pb blaster for all those rusty nuts and bolts.
