Default Rebuilt motor?

Just curious, I'm looking at buying an XJ with a rebuilt motor. Is this a good or bad idea? The jeep is a good deal, looks clean, no leaks or anything. Post says it drives great, but a rebuilt motor worries me. There isn't much info on the rebuild either (From the ad)

Professionally done vs garage done, should I trust it? Thoughts, opinions, ideas greatly appreciated.

It all depends on who did the rebuild and what was done during the rebuild. Was it slapped together in somebody's garage or done by a pro? Was it bored over and honed with all new parts installed, or a rattle can rebuild? I would say if it runs good and has no leaks or strange noises, you should be ok. Go with your gut feeling.

He said it runs good, no leaks or noises, even offered to let me drive it without hesitation. It seems like a solid motor, just wanted to double check before I step into potential trouble.

I'm sure he would say it runs good lol. When have you ever not heard that from someone trying to sell a car?

Give one of your mechanic buddies a twelve pack to check it out for you if you don't know what to look for.

This is a really easy one. If ANY car ad states that the motor or transmission has been rebuilt/replaced they BETTER have paperwork to back that up. Idc who it is. Anyone can say yep the motor was replaced and get one over on you. Documentation... Pictures.. Receipts.. They better be ready to hand them over. 8 out of ten of those ads boasting rebuilt motors are total garbage. Don't trust anyone on CL.
