Default Re-treads good or bad?

I am putting a 3" lift on my xj and want to run a set of 31's as well. I found 4 maxiss buckshot re-treds (different brand tires but same tred pattern) with 80% life for $225. Should I be uneasy? I've never considered re-treds so anyone w/ advice would be a huge help. I do more highway driving than offroad. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to CF. I bought retreads from www.treadwright.com and they were not as wide as the tire size said (31/10.5 (actually only 8 inches) but they were good tires and wore OK. I recently went for Trxus 29/10.5/15 STS Radials and love them. They are a true 10.5 wide and They have a great sand pattern which is where I go about 3-5 times a week and work well in snow and mud also but they are about $120 a piece..I say go for it for that price...Tj

I have some from treadwright and for street use they suck. Offroad only go for it.

Yeah I'm doing more highway driving so it has me slightly nervous. I have heard some horror stories about treds breaking loose and balancing issues (death wobble). I like cheap tires, but I don't like looking death in the face at 70mph either.

which ones did you get okc? I am running treadwrights bfg ats and they are great on road / off road. I have been running mine for 8-9 months now and they are still great tires. What is wrong with yours on road?

Just like everything in life, You get what you pay for. Tires are one area I myself, don't skimp on.

I am running Treadwright Warden A/T in 31x10.5. I put them on last Wednesday afternoon and left Thursday for the midwest. They worked GREAT!! I increased my mileage over the previous tires (Mickey Thompson Baja), by 1.5 mpg. The noise is much more tolerable and I can actually talk on the phone in a normal voice now.

I have a 3" lift also.

Thanks for all the advice...It sounds like tredwright is doing a good job. Unfortunately, the seller couldn't tell me where or when this were re capped...kinda shady character, but I actaully found a pair of bfg a/t's that I think I'm going with. For now that is

Thanks again everyone

I Don't know were you are located but check out www.craigslist.com I got a whole set of 33/12.5/15 BFG all-terrains with 90% tread for 200$. Be patient and you will find a good deal.

Recaps are much better nowadays rather than what they used to be. Sure you will have some lemons here and there, but you can expect that with everything. Treadwright does offer a 2 year 24,000 warranty. so if any problems do arise there shouldn't be too much trouble in that department. For the price of these tires, what the hell try and help clean up some of the garbage on this planet and use some green technology.
