Default Quick Diode Question

Asked on Naxja, but havent gotten any responces yet (thats naxja for ya). Hopefully I will have better luck here.

Would a 1N4001 Diode be fine where a 1N4002 diode is recommended? It only is going to see 12V, I dont know how many amps. Im kinda new to diodes.

I am doing the 2nd gear lockout, and it says "1N4002 diode or something like it": http://www.fourwheeler.com/techartic...ock/index.html

I used it to run a high rpm 100MM fan and it didnt blow up, I figure it would be fine but I should pry ask
