My poor 99 XJ Daily driver was totaled and I'm looking for something to replace it. I'm am going to look at a 97 ZJ with the 5.2 v8 112,000 miles. I have always owned XJ's with the i6. Any downs sides to the v8? Any information any one could give me about the v8 would be great. Also if I wanted to pull my XJ on a trailer could I do it with the 5.2????

the 5.2L are pretty stout engines...i have a buddy with 260k on his and it still doesnt burn oil.

now as for the tranny, im sure you will be rebuilding it soon. all grand cherokees have tranny probs. at least the 5 i have owned.

even the I-6 trannys have probs.....except a few of the 93's which came with the indestructable aw4.

yeah....most have the 249.....just buy another xj!!!!

 

I want an XJ, the wife wants a Grand.....Its a battle of the jeeps right now. I might have to put my foot down on this one!

 

All ZJ's with the 5.2 will have the 249 T-case.

On some days I miss my old ZJ but I'd only buy another if it was a V8 they get better mileage than the 4.0L's did..

 

The only reason I would get a grand is for the v8 so I can possible pull my trail rig in the future.

 

i def. wouldnt tow a trail rig with a grand.....tranny will go boom right quick


maybe a dirtbike trailer..............

 

I’m also thinking about getting a V8. What kind of tranny issues are you talking about here?
What is there to look out for before buying one?
And maybe even more important, how can I prevent it from happening?
