purpose of neutral?

Haha that made me cringe before I read the jk.
But yeah 4lo always at low speeds. It's basically for treacherous steep uphill towing where you need maximum torque. Or if you are really deep in the *****, last resort.

I get into 4 low soon as I get into the trail unless it's all flat. mine's a 5 speed so I don't have to shift into neutral to get it in low, just come to a stop with the clutch in, lol.

Instead of randomly saying "I think this or I think that" you guys could all try reading your owners manual.

The NP231 can be shifted on the fly into 4HI at speeds up to 55mph.

You do not need to come to a complete stop or shift the tranny into neutral to hit 4LO, you can shift into 4LO at speeds up to 5MPH.

transmission neutral is in case you run into problems and need to disengage power to the wheels while at speed, like if you're out of control in a skid on loose ground (ie. snow).

t-case neutral is mainly for towing. for auto trans, you put t-case in neutral and trans in park.
for standard trans, it's neutral t-case and neutral or 1st gear for trans.
reason being, auto trans coasting in neutral will burn out the torque converter seal. putting in park stops the trans pump from turning.
standard doesn't have said seal or pump.

and don't shift to 4lo unless under 2mph and trans in neutral, or just stop in neutral to ensure no damage.

Bingo. Towing an automatic while it's in transmission neutral will still spin the auto trans's internals along with the torque converter. This is why you should drop the driveshaft if ever towing an automatic car for a long distance or at high speeds or risk burning up the clutch bands and popping the converter. I guess they put neutral in the transfer case in most 4wd's because they know owners will get stuck or break something and require pulling/towing at some point.

Originally, 40's 50's the transmission had a mechanical winch connected to it.
To use the winch only (not driving and winching together), the transfer case had to be in neutral.

They just kept making the transfer cases the same way instead of redesigning.
