I've somehow managed to accumulate a dozen or more rims and tires. I really like some of the rims, and will have use for them, however nearly all the rubber is garbage.

I don't have a tire machine, and I'd rather avoid paying to have each one separated.

Anyone got suggestions on how to do myself?

Keep in mind I don't want to damage the rims...

Any help is appreciated!

 

Ive used sawzall a couple times

 

Check harbor freight, I know someone makes a personal dismounting kit.

 

Remove the valve core, run over tire edge with Cherokee to unseat bead. Cut away with Sawzall.

 

That'll do it. If you have a shop press that'll also work.

 

Once unseated how do i get the edge of the rubber over the lip?

I kinda messed with a sawzall on one of the tire/rims i didn't care about, but was having a ***** of a time...maybe because I was by myself...?

 

Pry bar, tire iron, Hickory stick, anything that will give you leverage.

 

I just don't want to damage the rim.

I could use a piece of wood between the pry bad and rim I guess.

 

HF does sell that cheap manual mount/dismount tool. I have used sawzall before it is a PITA. A long pry bar get between the bead and rim then cut the bead with sawzall then repeat on other side. They should pop off rather easy after the bead it cut to the sidewall. If its alot of tires like you say it would be easier to bite the bullet and buy the tool you will end up using it more than you think.

I personally have access to a tire shop now so the hard way is behind me haha.

 

bring a case of beer and/or a couple 20s to a shop. doing it yourself once sucks, i cant imagine dismounting multiple tires manually.

 

My dad has one. It works but you have to wait until winter to use it or you WILL sweat ALOT. It's a lot of work & the bar you use to move the beads over the lip of the wheel bends easily.

My solution, go to Wal-Mart & pay $2 for them to dismount & dispose of them.

I'm not sure where you live but You could try taking it to a discount tire if you have one near you, I know they'll do it for free.

 

Gobo an autoparts store (autozone, advanced, nap, oriely) get a set of three "spoons" for tire mounting(they work for dismounting) easiest with some help but can be done alone.
