Its hard to diag something without being there, but it could be that your planetary gear set in the transfercase isn't engaging all the way or not meshing together when you put it in 4wheel. What year is it? What is it XJ ZJ? What mods if any?

I would suggest you inspect the ring and pinion for anything that could binding it, but I doubt thats it because it rolls in 2WD mode.
I'm thinking that its in the transfer case and the chain is binding/locked up.
But then it turns all the time anyway when driven front wheels.
Hmm,
Have you tried it in 4LO?
NO CAD to fungle up, got me stumped I can't think of anything there that could bind/lock up under power, but free spool when not.

What kind of surface are you on? You do know not to engage a part time 4x4 on pavement right? Many people have no experience with 4x4s and think they are the same thing a AWD cars and can be ran in 4x4 anywhere.

Thought about this and I'm going to ask the same question......
Jack up the front end.
Put a chalk mark on the tire and grab the drive shaft and rotate the tire one full turn, counting the turns of the yoke.
Repeat for the rear they should equal.
Easier than pulling covers and counting gears and will give you a close enough estimate to know if the ratios are the same.
