Default Pointers: Looking For A Cherokee

Hey guys,

I've been new on here for about two weeks now. I don't have a Jeep yet, but i'm definitely looking for one right now. I'm planning on getting one possibly in May; my dad is working right now and we, and my other friend, Ty (oodynamite) are going hunting for a Cherokee.

I'm just curious, coming from Jeep owners already, do you guys have any pointers on what year is a good year to be looking at? I know it's a pretty lame question, but i'm trying to get some insight of what's a better pick.

Also, would it be the right choice to look at buying an already lifted Jeep? I mean there's a lot of money-saving in that, but I'm a guy where I want a stock and work on it with some buddies and gain some knowledge doing it. Would it be right to get an already lifted Jeep?

I'm looking forward to off-roading with my friend, since i have already with him, and it's pretty much AMAZING. So, coming from you guys, which i'll depend on, i'd like some pointers on choosing a Cherokee!

Thanks guys

I think from what I've seen the best sellers are like 96 (the last of that body style) through 99. But they all are a pretty good choice! Make sure and look to see if there's rust underneath and all. If you buy a lifted one I'd take it to have it checked out. Some people do some really weird stuff to get their lifts on, that's why I'd like to get a stocker and build it from there. At least I know it's been done right.

Good luck on your search! Watch Craigslist like CRAZY! There's one in North Carolina for sale on the forum in the Mid Atlantic section. It's a two door for sale for 1800 bucks. It looks clean. I'm not sure if you're anywhere close by there or not.

99 is probably the best, but I like my 93. Older ones are usually cheaper obviously. Don't go to old, and get the Renix engine there not bad, but you don't want one. Make sure it has the 4.0 High Output engine. Check for Rust, Rust is the worst thing for a jeep. And make sure all the electrical works. These things are notorious for electrical issues.

Find one you like. DON'T OVER PAY, and make it yours. They are fun rigs.

Where are you located?

Mine may be for sale, it's a 10 year project built well using good quality components and meticulous maintenance.

I can link you to my build thread if your somewhat close to Pa.

Buying a lifted Jeep does make it easier... however you could be buying someone else's headache. It may be lifted but it does not mean it was done correctly using the right parts.

You seem interested to learn and there is no better way to learn than doing it.. in my opinion I think a stock Jeep would be a better place to start and you will most likely end up with a rig that was not previously abused.

Yeah, thanks man! I'm a little sketchy about someone else's job on lifting their cherokee by theirselves, but i think that's what im gonna do. but a stock then get it lifted with some help, not by myself where the job would be a little crappy. haha.

look for a high pinion front and a 8.25 rear instead of the dana 35 rear

LOL dude you love that head banging thing dont you? But I would agree with the others. A 99 with an HO and a high pinion D30 should do the trick. And and get it stock, I'll be putting my lift on soon and you can help me with that, then when we lift yours we will actually know what we are doing.
