Default Please help a Newb

Hello,

I have a 2005 GC 5.7 with 50K miles and have had nothing but problems with it. I am not really a car guy so I figured I would ask the experts.

I average about $2000-$2500 in repairs per year. (I live in NYC)

Please forgive if I use incorrect terms etc. I am just looking for help.

The front brakes last about 18 months and then have to be replaced. The rotors have had to be cut every single time. Now the rotors have to be replaced.

Each of the 5 tire pressure sensors has crapped out at least once. (absurdly they tell me the "just weren't designed for rough terrain)

The transmission has had to be replaced. (well part of it. Cannot recall exactly which bit but it was very extensive)

The front differential has had to be replaced.

Lots of transmission fluid issues.

Sway bars bushings replaced.

Front stabilizer links replaced.

Radiaitor work has to be done often.

Tires replaced.

Nav unit replaced (broken ****)

Brake control switch replaced 3 times.

The key stopped working. Who ever heard of a broken key? Three hundred bucks.

There is a bunch of other stuff but I don't have the file in front of me.

Also, the stuff they say is "normal":

The car clunks really loud when you put it in gear. R or F.

The car under acceleration makes a loud knocking noise that makes it sound like an old 70's clunker under load. It makes the car truly unpleasant to drive.

Car makes loud squeaking noises when going over bumps. LOUD

Like I said it has 5oK miles. Driven off road vary rarely. Mostly city driving.

The people at Jeep blame most of the problems with driving over bumps and rough city terrain. They have to be out of their minds to tell me a Jeep cannot handle a few pot holes. I have an old BMW that has never had an issue with the same exact type of driving.

I like the car but at this point I really don't think I want to put any more money into it. Please tell me if this degree of issues is what you consider normal for this car.

Many thanks in advance.

Honestly, the brake problem is probably just the mechanic screwing you. The TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system)sensors are easy to break off when changing a tire. The sway bar bushings and links shouldn't be even close to bad(most likely mechanic screwing you).

The transmission is a weird deal though. I had to do a full rebuild on my mustangs T5 when the car only had 27k miles on it.

yeah man I would look into finding another shop. We used to have a 2005 dodge ram 1500. All it had was problems from day one, tranny blew at 30k, all kinds of sensors took a **** and what not. We went and contacted Chrysler with a legal action about the truck being a big pos, they responded with either giving us a brand new truck, or a 10 year bumper to bumper transferable warranty. We took the warranty, you might try going that route, but idk if your jeep is out of warranty but you could always try.

for the clunks, I'm thinking u-joints in the rear drive shaft are bad.

The squeaking could be your shocks. I would have to hear it to diagnose more precisely.

Edit: Next time you take your jeep in to get worked on, when they finish, ask them if you can see the part that was bad. If they say no, tell them you won't pay, because you don't know if it was actually bad or not. Take them to court if you like.

Should have bought an xj. Just messing with you. But honestly it sounds like your mechanic is ripping you off. I would find another one.

The problems you are having are normal wear and tear. Just not normal for a 50k mile vehicle. This is a direct reflection of what Chrysler has been doing with its brand names in the past ten years.

Chrysler has been building crap auto's for sometime now, yet people still buy them. Arguably all manufactures have their problems however Chrysler's seem to never change. Dodge has the worst transmission failure numbers amongst other widely known problems.

The Jeep tech was correct in telling you the SUV was not designed for moderate off road use. Due to the Chrysler impact on the Jeep name they have been driven toward designs with only one intention, street use (Wrangler excluded). They use the Jeep name and heritage as a sales technique. Jeep has not been Jeep sense the late 90's.

Now for all the bigots: Not all auto's made by Chrysler Will break down after you drive off the lot but then again not all Toyota's will kill you because the throttle wants to take you on a joy ride. Its a problem with quality of parts and assembly procedures and their lack of giving two *****s.

You may want to look into another vehicle before that thing costs you anymore. Ford (as an example only) has been doing well in the market place and build quality has only improved in recent years. I hope this helps and best of luck.

Trs80 said it, I agree.
Only Jeep really intended for any off-road use since 2001 is wrangler. Not too sure about those anymore, also. 4 Door on a Wrangler, give me a break. 2 doors is too many.
