It is a government agency (Title 39, Section 101.1 of the United States Code). The Postal Service Fund authorized by congress allots $96 million dollars annually to do the things you described, with taxpayer money. Not exactly a small amount of money... And whether this looming post office bailout actually happens is irrelevant. Because they lose about $49 million a day, or about $16.2 billion a year (2012 data). And because of that drastic loss, they are asking congress for solutions to their problem, which ties up our hopeless government even more, costing money. So whatever you would like to argue will always be qualified by the fact that taxpayer bailout or congressional action will cost Americans money. And the latter might be even worse than a monetary strike to your pocketbook, because it delays more important issues that will cost you money, like the repeal of obamacare and what not. Just my .02 but who wants to argue about that...

http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/consum.../uspsabout.htm

(39 USC 101.1 & 98m annually)

http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/daily...121913449.html

(49m a day, 16b in 2012, & government dependency or bailout)

I don't want to start a riot....I'm talking about a failing company, who has cut over 300,000 jobs, closed 50 sorting facilities, cutting overtime hours for it's hardworking employees, and still planning to convert full time post offices to part time facilities. It's no wonder they couldn't help the op.
