Part Time 4x4 '?'
Hey all,
Just a quick question about 4x4 part time. I know your not supposed to drive with it on at highways speeds, but we need to make a trip tomorrow morning (50 mile 1 way) and just got hit with yet another wonerful
snow storm....hoping roads will be good when we need to leave, but if not, can I make the trip in part time 4x4 traveling say 50+mph? With out causing any damage? Jeep is a '95 5spd 4.0 with 'part-time' 4x4 and 124K...Thanks for any and all input.

if you have part time you should have full time too correct? You will not hurt it driving over 50 or so in part time. I would do it in full time if you can.

He has the NP231, which is "Part time" only. It is meant to be used in slippery conditions where the tires can slip. This is because the front and rear tires are directly linked together inside the Tcase and tight turns/etc can cause binding on dry pavement.
OP:
I would say go for a while in 2wd, If you start sliding around corners/etc. Put it in part time.

Well, now I don't know if we will travel or not....we are a Level 2 and where we need to go is a level 1....I'm getting really sick of all the
Snow!!
So basicaly 2hi till it gets slippery, then 4hi till roads are better and back to 2hi.

i use my part time 4 hi all the time in winter.
just reach down and throw it back into 2wd when the road is clear. then back into 4hi for snow. i always either shift into neutral in my auto or clutch it in my tj when i do this.
but for what it's worth, i've left mine in 4hi and got on the highway at 120kph for about 50 miles all dry pavement. it never exploded. however, it's not that good on the chain and can stretch it then it will start sticking in 4hi if done a lot.

the cammand trac which is whats in all wranglers, and most XJs and most libbys..this t case has 2 hi, 4 hi, and 4 lo...
then youve got the selec trac which has the 2 hi, 4 part time, 4 full time, and 4 lo...this is in some XJs, and some zjs/wjs and some kjs (libby)...
then the quadra trac with 4 all time, and 4 lo..with is also all time...so you can have it in 4 lo, but its in 2wd until it needs the 4wd...this t case is in ZJs, and WJs...
so yes, sorry to get off topic, but yes, its just in the t case bc its basically just automatically going into 4wd and out...
but the quadra drive like what i have on the WJ is more complicated then just the t case...

Ok Thanks again guys, we went and made it safe and sound. Once on the Highway the roads were fine, drove in 2hi at 70+mph with no trouble. 
BUT, on a side note, is 17mpg good? I never owned a 4x4 before, and I know modd'n the XJ will affect mpg, but to my knowledge it's all stock. Got it from Father-in-law and he didn't do anything to it, and he got it from a private owner that as far as he knew no mod was done to it. But the wife and I after looking at it and compared to other XJ we seen in parking lots it DOES look to be lifted....but not sure. here's a pick of the front, if anyone can tell from the pic alone.

and don't switch to that system from the zjs that is all wheel drive. the tc uses a viscous coupler which burns out really easily

17 is in the allowable range for the cherokee. we had a 2 wheel drive 95 and it got 20 to 21 on the highway but our current 4x4 87 only gets about 12 to 13 in town. i cannot tell you the highway mileage because i haven't taken it on any trips.
