You guys might be thinking too in-depth about this.

The manual says "any legal speed" just because they don't want the liability if someone throws it in 4wd doing 100 MPH because obviously, you shouldn't be doing 100 MPH.

I've never had any problems throwing it into 4 Full Time at any speed I've ever gone and the same stories are to be told from others who have done it. The only people I've ever heard on any forum say not to do it over 55 MPH are those that are skeptical about trusting the system engage at those speeds.

I would be skeptical too. But I don't believe there are any true limits. The XJ is not a racecar and can't go very fast to begin with.

I think we are just having fun with it.
Also, no disrespect is intended from my part, just good nartured amusement.

My 242 can be tempermental when shifting into 4WD while tranny is in Drive. But, it shifts immediately if tranny is in Neutral.
Also, the 242 is known to sometimes get 'spline-lock' after running in 4WD.
Going in reverse after engaging 2WD usually unlocks it.

I'm more skeptical about people driving that fast when they think they might need 4wd

So keep part time but get lockers (lockers for front and back?) and gas tank skid plate? Am I missing anything?

Is it your daily driver?

Well it really depends on what type of lockers you want to run. If you are in a budget then lunchbox lockers will work but since it's your dd I would start by locking the front. If your talking about a selectable locker it really doesn't matter since you have the ability to engage and disengage it.

While you are at the salvage yard might as well get a steering skid and transfer case skid along with the gas skid. All are usually $20 each.

If it's your daily driver and you intend to keep Full Time, only locking the rear is recommended.

If you just want part time, lock everything.

Uh oh, stick shift. Auto lockers (lunchbox) are fussy with a manual.

They aren't that bad.
You get used to them after about 10 miles.

What about on the trail, that is where I have heard of issues. Due to the lock-unlock-lock during shifts and anytime the clutch is pushed.

I've had front and rear Aussies in mine for about 4-5 years now and I've never noticed that before. If it does do it, its so minute I can't tell. Then again this is the first vehicle that I've put lockers in so anything it does I assume is normal haha.

The only real annoyance is going around long swooping turns while in 2wd at speed. If you don't maintain constant throttle you will get a lot of bucking. Other than that I hardly realize they are there.
