I'm currently in Bahrain for work. This Sunday I plan to wander the scrap yards and see what I can find. Are there features/parts specific to the overseas models of XJs? Would be cool to bolt parts onto mine from across the globe.
Is Bahrain in the Persian Gulf? Wondering how many you would find but Google the European Orvis XJ. Back seats in them have headrests. I am going to try and mod up a back seat to achieve that. Found a write up. Also they have headlight leveling. There is an adjustment in the radio bezel. Always wondered what that is about and why it exists. Maybe a real rear spoiler. I have the Spoilerlights version of that. Always cruising the European version of Ebay. See oil coolers and power steering coolers but have no idea if they are for XJ's or other Jeeps over there. I would have a field day in boneyards in England or Europe. Keep us posted. Dying to know what you find. I would pay for something interesting. The cost, your time, and shipping if not over the top outrageous. Upper rear seat with the headrests for starters maybe. Oh and assuming they are right hand drive a leather passenger heated seat covers. Figure those would be in good shape, ya know how the driver's seat is the one that take the beating, but can be used here as a drivers.
There are a fair number of XJs here. They are all LHD here though sadly. I'll see what I can find out about the Orvis models. The headlight leveling sounds interesting.
There are basically two parts of the island that have junk yards. I made it out to the Hamala area of the island that has many small junkyards. There were two large yards, each with about 200 cars or so. Then there were probably 7 or 8 smaller yards that had around 50 cars each. Out of all of the yards, I found two XJs. A 92 and a 96, both four doors. I grabbed a fog lamp switch from one, can never have too many switches.
Best find was a pair of Hella H4 E code housings. Paid 4 Denar for the pair ($10.60 US). The trick will be getting them home in one piece.
Well, if you go back....here's a list of 97+ stuff
1. The 4 switch "police package" bezel was much more common overseas.
2. The rear fog switch. It's a momentary, like the defrost switch.
3. Rear tail lights that are all red. Those may have the rear fogs.
4. LHD Diesel dash piece that goes around the gauge cluster. It has the "diesel tell-tale" aka the diesel information center in that oval false cutout we all know and love. Here's a pic from one that's RHD
5. Center dash cap that has the leveling switch
6. Any orvis parts, like this center console trim:
I'm currently sitting on my couch in Bahrain waiting to catch a plane. BUT, I'll be back out here in a month or so. Will have to check the yards on the southern part of the island. Couple large ones down there.
