overdrive
I've been driving my unlces wj for a bit. Can someone explain the importantance of overdrive. I know it helps you shift and get more power. I can't really word it. And is it better off or on.

Engine: 4.0 with all of the noise and clatter
Overdrive is for better fuel mileage, it also allows the first two gears to be lower for better accelleration and towing, third gear is a one to one ratio, fourth is overdrive.

When you're towing. That's really the only application. It keeps the transmission and drive train from straining by bogging down to hard or constantly shifting in and out of OD.
