So I was wondering has anybody used hood pins instead of the dumb latch assembly that's prone to messing up. I only ask because I will be tackling the latch/cable today again . I just put a new cable on the other weekend cause mine broke. Went to pop the hood to check fluids the other day and no tension at all on the cable. So either the new cable broke after two pulls or it came unseated...looking for some options.
My '00 sticks a bit. Figure at some point in time I will be replacing it. Was toying with the idea of doing that to. Was also thinking about using one of those Hood Lift Kits. Thinking the pressure of the lift supports might help keep everything from rattling as you are driving. Anyway your question made me google a few things. This is what I found. By the way thank you. If I ever do this I am this much ahead of the game.
That Hood Lift Kit is pricey. Think you can buy it cheaper. Also thinking you can rig one. The ends the supports go into are usually available separately. Gotta find the supports them selves. Just take a bit to figure out what you need. Ford Taurus and Explorers are where I would look first. If memory serves me right they might be similar.
Thanks for the links. Was also thinking about wrangler style hold downs, but not too sure on that. I just figured that as failure prone as the factory stuff is, us Jeepers would figure a work around.

Thanks
FYI, oil the new cable. I replaced the original and the new cable broke. Oiled another replacement and it works like a charm. I squirt some oil now and then when the hood is up.
I have used these on cars http://www.aerocatch.com/products i always mount them so the flip up piece is facing foward so i can see if they are open from the driver seat.

I been meaning to do that. Just always seem to never get to it. What are you using to oil it anyway?
I used to have a problem with them sticking. This would sometimes cause the hood to pop up going down the road. Spraying the release mechanism on the hood where the cable ends solved the problem permanently.
So, it looks like the plastic that goes into the latch pull was too small and just fell out . I squeezed the tab together with some pliers and the cable is snug and worked 5 times in a row. So I'm still gonna consider pins, cause I'm sure the dumb latch will fail again.
Hood pins, because when I go overlanding, I don't want to be stuck somewhere, and then either not be able to pull the cable, or have it snap on me. Plus, it doesn't look half bad. Love the aerocatch pins too!
99% of these problems can be solved or never happen with just a little care like oiling of the cable and latch assembly. When oiling the cable open the hood and leave it open and disconnect the cable from the latch if really stuck. Then hold the cable up I use a pair of small vice grips to clamp mine to the hood and starting running a little oil into the cable for a day or 2 and working the handle a little each day till free.
After that all it takes is just a little oil now and then to keep in in good shape all the time. I have used PB blaster one occasion but mostly use a 3-1 oil to do it.
I only use hood pins on race cars or HP ones and most of those have latches also the pins are a fail safe. because they rattle and when air gets under the hood they seen to rise more with the pins only.

Go to Amazon and type in cable oiler. They are about 10 bucks and last for years. Will do the job clean in seconds. We used them on off road race motorcycles.
