Optima 34/78 Yellowtop fit in stock 96 XJ battery tray?
Pep boys has 30% off right now so I picked up an Optima 34/78 yellowtop for about $160. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that it will fit in the factory battery tray, but I wanted to be sure before I take the old battery out.
Will it fit?

I don't know the answer to your question, but it would take less time to pull your old battery out and try to see if the new one fit than it took to write this reply.

I'm waiting on my new power cable kit from Kelley WIP, which should be here next week sometime; so I have time. I don't want to taint the new battery with the crappy old stock cables that are in there.

34/78 Yellow Top fits my 1996 battery tray. Slightly undersized and comes with a shim that clips on bottom-side of battery to make snug in tray.

Optimas used to be great batteries but once they started making them overseas quality went out the door. I went through 3 yellow tops in less than a year and the red top we put in my brothers lasted less than a 6 months before it wouldn't take a charge. I'll never waste my money on one again. Also if you don't already know you can't use a regular charger on them or you'll burn it up.

Well, it's got a 3 year warranty and as long as I don't do anything to screw it up I should be good to go. I eventually want to have dual batteries and will add a red top when I get the airbox removed and second battery bracket (some day).
I was looking at their mounts earlier today, very tempting. How easy is it to make one of those fit in a XJ? Do I remove the factory mount?

I have had a Yellow Top for over three years in my daily driver/trail rig. Twice a week or more I fill 4 tires without engine running.
And use it to charge lithium batteries when out flying RC planes.
Have left the headlights on for an hour also. Always been dependable.
