... I don't understand how different shocks can affect anything myself. I thought the springs held more weight in the area of comfort riding, but maybe I'm misunderstanding it all.

Shocks make the ride they control the springs keep jeep from bouncin all over the place like a boat. Id go with bilstein hear a lot of good things about them I myself have Rough Country's 2.2 shocks & they work great ride quality on road & off road is nice handling is very predictable. Bilstein's are what I plan on replacing them with see if the $$$ makes the difference.

This is what I did. The 2.2's were ok but a bit on the soft side. They kept leaking up front and the rears would make nasty noises. I got a bunch of replacement shocks from RC but never could fix the issue. They came off and replaced with some Zone Nitro shocks which were cheaper but way better in absorbing the bumps and helping with stability. With the 2.2's, those road width risers would create a nasty hop on both axles but that was eliminated with the Zone shocks. Unfortunately their 4.5" shock is way too short for my RC long arm kit so now Bilstein 5100's are on the way here from eshocks.com.

I've been running a set of Doestec for about 8 years now and they work just as good as new. If I'm riding a really bumpy trail they tend to make a little noise due to heat but still ride fine. My old RC shocks would get hot and then it was like not having any. I put Bilsteins on my Cummins tow pig and honestly can't tell a difference from the old stock ones, but it is a ton truck and rides like one so I doubt any shock would make it ride like a caddy.

A shock doesn't absorb shock but dampens the spring oscillations so you don't keep bouncing. Different shocks are either stiffer or softer to allow the spring to keep flexing or not. This gives you the suspension feeling of rough or smooth.
