Opinions Needed - DIY Hi Lift Winch Brackets or Buy..???
I'm debating whether I should fab my own lifting nose and tensioner bracket similar to what's in the ORK or just buy the kit itself. Honestly, I don't need anything other than the brackets and chain/hooks. If I make it myself, it might cost a bit more than the kit but it would be heavier duty than what's in the kit. I would go with grade 70 chain and hooks, grade 8 bolts, and if I had to make a nose piece bracket it would be made from 1/4" flat stock.
One option of a nose piece bracket is this...

Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated...

Hello Crow Horse.
Just make it yourself. I did and it works awesome. for me the winch option for the high lift is its best usage. Its more valuable than an actual winch. I have used it so many times where a winch would not have worked.
There are methods to use also to get yourself out if you are completely burried to the axles by yourself . So bad a winch would stall out. The high lift will work. It takes longer, and some work, but nothing beats it.
A couple pix.

From what I understand they have. I don't have any real experience with them (they are illegal in my state) but my mom, sister and brother in law all have them for their cars.
They live outside of reno nv and there are signs on some roads that say "tire chains required when lights are flashing". Using chains out there is just a way of life. I figure if my mom can put chains on her ford focus in a snow storm, it can't be too bad.

I've done a 180 regarding the chains. Seems like the current generation of "chains" are far easier to install than has been my experience. I'm still going forward with fabbing winch brackets for the hi lift to use as a last resort....

Here are a couple of pics of the tensioner bracket I made. It's pictured not as I intend to use it, but rather to illustrate the hardware I used. All hardware relating to chain is grade 70 or equivalent (WLL 6600#'s) Columbus McKinnon. I still need to get small lengths of 3/8 gr. 70 chain for the nose piece & tensioner. With any luck I'll powder coat it this week...
The 1" hole in the bracket is for a bow shackle if I find the need to use one.....
