socket set, wrenches, vise grips, mechanics wire, jb weld, rtv sealant, motor oil, diff fluid, flashlight, spare keys, rags, gloves, spare tire, hi-lift jack, recovery straps, shackles, booster pack is nice.
most importantly, dry clothes, blanket, fire material (matches/lighter), food and water.
no chain as mentioned, and of course, no beer.
i've been camping with bears my whole life and have never owned a gun. i do however sleep with a knife and my estwing axe. not that it'll do me any good. by the time i wake up to a bear breathing in my face, it's too late for my axe, let alone a gun.

I always keep 3 in the back of my Jeep.
Spare tire, trail box with jump cables, spare fluids, spare parts, hand tools (everything I need for most repairs except a breaker bar, I need one), gas mask, recovery strap. Probably more i'm forgetting.
