Having lots of National Forest out here, we Use Geo Referenced PDF Maps by Avenza. THey take the USFS MVUM Map and georeference it so you can use it on your phone. even without cell service. It is the only Georeferenced map recognized by the USFS. Otherwise, i just use the normal Garmin basemaps for road travel.

I use a Garmin GPS Oregon 450t with central US topo maps from Forest Service/National Parks and other open areas separate maps with extra charge but very detailed even down to foot trails and small streams. It can also be used as a handheld (internal battery) or in a windshield mount with 12V for hiking or hunting.
