Gotcha.

What about penetrating oil then?

Gotta pull the trans pan to change that cable assembly IIRC.

But, he says it's not downshifting after washing the engine.........

Yea,BLASTER should free that button.

There was another thread recently where some had the engine power washed and it messed with their TPS(among other things).

Adding this to my list of 1,000 or so threads that begin with: "I just washed/power washed my engine and now it doesn't _______________."

Well... strangely enough, EZearl, that link to me to a page where I was able to buy the cable.

So, we'll see soon enough if that's the right one.

I have two issues: One is that it stopped shifting and started having idle issues when I washed the engine.

I don't know if the TPS is what's giving me headaches, but I just received the new one that going on this morning, so I'll know soon enough if that's the problem.

My other issue is the cable that can't be adjusted. I've done the soaking in oil/WD40 since I bought the beast, and it's still refusing my advances, so.....

Since I've pretty much changed all the sensors on the beast, I also want to be able to play around with that cable and adjust it, which I can't do now.

I appreciate everybody's continuing support, and I'll be back soon with another update.

Thanks, gentlemen.

Yea I knew you could buy the cable there. I posted the diagram in reply to Crusier's post about possibly having to remove the pan for installation.

WD40 is not for penetrating corrosion. If you can get PB Blaster try it. Be nice to have that old cable for an extra.

MANY TIMES over the yrs have I used a pressure washer to clean under the hood of my vehichles and never had an issue. Maybe it's because I don't blast with it. Got me second guessing myself now though cause I'd sure hate to end up on F1's list.

LOL! It seems to be a bigger issue with Jeeps. I washed the engine bay of my Civic and my Mustang all the time and never had a problem, ever. I've read enough horror stories from XJ owners washing their engines that I would never do it. I got a couple of those pump-up pressure sprayers and I fill one with detergent and the other with water. That's what I use to wash my engine. How ironic would it be if I ended up on my own list?

If you end up on your own list for doing that then I'll be parking my XJ in the garage if the chance of rain gets above 10%. Might not even drive in fog.

Also that's GOOD idea about the pump sprayer. I just happen to have one.

Well.......

You'll never believe this, but I set the TPS down somewhere, and now I can't find the darn thing.

I've spent the whole morning retracing my steps. I'll remember sooner or later.

Hey, while I got everybody's attention, anybody have one of these sensors they'd like to let go cheap?

You mean you didn't know that vehicle parts just walk off at times. HOPE it comes back.

What sensor is it?

All righty then.....

I found the TPS. I'm not going to say where, but I found it. (gentle ribbing here)

I've just installed it, and now it's got a miss. I'm not sure if I've adjusted it correctly, so I've been searching for "adjust TPS" here on the board for the last two hours.

Unfortunately, the search function doesn't do a very good job of narrowing down the results.

Presently, I adjusted the little "arm" that pushes the "lever" on the TPS so it is just in contact but not being pushed down at all.

Can one of you guys tell me if that's close?

The engine doesn't have much power either, with an occasional "pop" up through the throttle body.

What do you guys think?

If the lever of the TPS is not moving with the linkage, you've installed the TPS incorrectly. The tang is on the wrong side.

Click on the link in my signature and go to post 8 for TPS adjusting instructions.

Don't bend stuff.....

Bend? lol.... never. Yeah, I looked again, and it's on top when it should be underneath.

I was trying to remember how the TPS is adjusted, and it came back to me that it's a voltage thing, not a physical adjustment.

I'm gonna go through your tips again, and let you know how it goes.

As usual, thanks for your help.

Post 8. It's both electrical and mechanical.

Understood. I meant to write that, but it came out wrong.

So, the latest update.

I adjusted the TPS per cruisers instructions. The output voltage now is right on the money. (it was off by 2v)

Starting seems to take 1/2 a second more than it should. It seems like it should catch a little sooner, but that may be my imagination.

The downshifting (passing gear) is working again, so I'm attributing that to the bad/wet TPS.

Something is still off. The engine is not accelerating the way it should, and the passing gear doesn't kick in as soon as it should.

The performance is lackluster, and I've heard one or two small pops out of the throttle body while accelerating.

The engine does seem to responding normally if I'm travelling at 50 mph or so and punch it. Power seems pretty normal then.

It sounds almost like the ignition isn't advancing correctly.

I've always thought I was losing some vacuum through the brake booster, so I bought and installed a new master cylinder/booster.

Any suggestions on what I should check?

I noticed that in your tips, you have a procedure for adjusting the timing manually. Any reason not to use a timing light?
