Default NO HEADLINER..

For those of you that have taken you headliner out completely, do you regret doing it? My XJ has lived a hard life from the PO and I am fixing it little by little as time and money permits. My headliner is sagging and I am more of no frills kind of guy and would just like to take it out but, if it does do some good, then I would rather replace the fabric and put it back in. Then again none of my interior lights work so losing them wouldn't be a big deal but, what do you do with the sunvisors?

It is my understanding that it always stays damp if you take it out.

Took mine out about a year ago and used Duplicolor undercoating to keep the metal from getting too hot and for some sound deadening. Don't regret it at all. Actually prefer it over having the headliner. And no, it does not stay damp. I don't know where anyone would get that.

When I had my XJ, I too took mine out it was sagging bad. I just left the roof how it was, and it was fine, no dampness or anything like that all the time. For the sunvisors I just screwed them back into place. You cant put anything behind the sunvisors (papers and stuff) because they will blow away because it has a slightly bigger gap after you remove the headliner.

I took my headliner out, I run 32's BF AT and I have a roof rack with my spare up top.... I wish I had left it on, It helps with the dampening of noise. Now I have to find a new one. If it's sagging fix it. From what I've read it's easy just takes a couple hours max to sand the glue off.

Other than that I'm sure it helps maintain heat in the winter- cooler in the summer.

Sand the glue off?

I like the finished look of the headliner in my DD. Other than that... I could care less.

I haven't had a headliner in my trail rig for 3 years. Don't miss it a bit.

Stays damp, craziness.

That's why i used the undercoating. No dampness, acts as a sound deadener.

It's realy loud when it's raining/hailing. Never had any dampness, but the roof rack was not used correctly by the PO's. Because the roof is very...flexible When you reach highway speed the roof pushes in & pushes out when you slow down. No headliner makes it louder. Also makes it louder when shutting the doors & hatch.

Hey, that sounds like a great idea, and if you use a dark color, I bet it'll seem a little roomier too.
Any chance you could take some well lit pics, and what was your game plan for not covering the seats in a light mist of spray.

In places where it gets really cold, condensation can be a problem, even if you spray the inside of the roof with something like bedliner. The bedliner/undercoating does okay at reducing vibration and providing noise insulation but not so great at temperature insulation. If the outer skin of your metal roof panel is in contact with cold air and the inside is in contact with warm, moist air then condensation will form on the inside of the roof panel just like it does on the inside of the glass under the same conditions. The only way to prevent this is to have an insulating barrier like a headliner separating the passenger compartment from the cold metal.

That makes sense. So for a year round DD, you're going to happier with some cloth. However with a trail rig weekend warrior type, why not ditch it.

I ran with no headliner for a lil over a year. It was perfectly fine and didnt bother me one bit. Gets a lil loud when it rains though. I later found a mint headliner locally for 10 bucks and put it in to hide all the wires I had going to my switches.

mines out. really loud when it rains etc. so I just tell people to turn the stereo up. wait. I dont have a stereo yet -_-
I fully plan on putting something back in because when I close the doors the whole thing makes the sound of thin metal being punched.
but it looks way better than when it had the shredded headliner

Yeah, I'm just waiting to get a 97+ for next to nothing. Then I'll go back to headliner.
