Default Newby looking for advice before purchase

Hello all,

I've been lurking and gleaning info for a bit now. I've been lusting after XJ's for quite a while and am getting close to finally making a purchase.

I have found a pretty good deal on an '01 that is already lifted, 122,000 mi., and seems to be in pretty good order. My only hesitation is relating to the 0331 head problems. Should I avoid 2000-2001 XJ's and try to find a '97-'99. One of the biggest XJ draws for me is the long term reliability of the 4.0L engine. Is that diminished with the 0331 head?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cory

Just don't let it overheat. Have a link to the for sale ad?

If you do stay away from the 00 - 01, get the 99 so you dont have to swap to the 99+ intake later on...you know you'll want that extra 20hp

You can actually see what the cast number is on the head if you take a flashlight and look under the hood on the driver's side of the engine. You didn't say it was 0331; only that you were trying to avoid it.

If worst came to worst, it might be as simple as replacing the head if it did crack. As long as it runs at a decent temperature (under 210), then you should be fine for a while.

I've never owned a 2000+ Cherokee. But good luck!

Well, I checked the head casting and sure enough, it's an 0331. Everything seemed OK on the Jeep.

There was some residue around the radiator cap that may be stop leak, and there were some other minor issues: small leaks, power windows issues, etc. Tires were completely worn.

Also, there was almost no flexibility in price.

well he took the add off a C/L. I agree, that as long as it was never over heated you should be fine. but if you haven't bought it yet, why take a chance. but thats me.

When i bought my 99 i knew nothing about the 0331 heads on the 00-01s, so i got lucky.lol

If i had known...??? well i'll be ohnest; i WOULD NOT have bought the 00-01s. but thats just me. good luck in what you decide to do and post pics of her.
