AYYO, my name is chad and i live in Newnan,Ga.im 22yrs old and not as familiar with Jeeps as i am Toyotas; However, I did own a 1990 Cherokee Laredo.2Dr 4x4.

I'm in the market for a XJ. from what ive read i want something from 1991-1996. 96 was obdII. and i heard stay away from 97 b/c of the wiring diag.98 was good?

Id like 2dr but 4dr is just fine also. has to b xj&4x4.

MY question is..

--what should i look out for?
*how rare are the AW4s ? and are they easy to swap in?.
*i want the optional D44 front axle
*Did '91-'96have a D30 or D35 up front? 27 splines or 30?
*is it possible 4 me to have 4.56 gears and have a manual trans?
* and How reliable are the I-6s?
* and is it hard to get power out of this engine?

i currently own an 03' tacoma
an '93 2WD toyota p/u
and my 1985 with built 22re,SR5 fully loaded 5.29s . It's nicer than my '03. An have put countless hrs into. it's one of 400

You were really really close with your 90 Laredo, XJ!
The Peep is daily driven, hard mall crawled, moderatly offroad wheeled. We don't get rammy and don't get too stuck. Runs the 4.0 L6, AW4, NP231, D30 front disco with loc cable, non C clip D35, lockrite, powertrax.
3.5" PMEngineering Frankenlift , wheeled on 31'x10.5's.
That and the dog stuffed in 89 Laredo XJ 4door. Other than seals, gaskets, filters the engine and trans and differentials are original. Sure all the accessories get serviced or replaced. Yes the floors are fresh. All in all running over 565000 km, (350000+ miles), it's tired but not smokin.
So obviously the right XJ for you is an 89. Make it white!

welcome to the cherokee addiction
All jeeps have their problems (referring to different years). So no year is considered the best.

1) the aw4 is common, and easy to swap out for anther transmission (if you want)
2)Xjs come with the dana30 in the front(so if you want a D44 in the front you have to swap axles)
3)dana30 always came in the front
4)yes you can have 4.56 with manual trans
5)best engine jeep built
6) not sure lol im a newbie

Really common
They didnt have an optional D44 front axle in the USA
Every XJ has a 27 spline Dana 30s
Rare, unless someone regeared the axles
Extremely reliable, common for them to have 200-300k miles
How much power?

My '91 has 263,412.65 miles on an original un-rebuilt engine. Yes, I think it's time for a rebuild and maybe stroked, but it runs good.

Great! so far i have about 5000 bones saved for an unmolested xj.
after that i have just enough for some goodies for it. i already have a set of 2011 chevy silverado ltz wheels w/ 35's. im gonna booty fab some wheel adapters for the the xj i dont have.lol

Q... the 4.0L engine, im sure it has a mild bored prob like 88mm and a very long stroke like 102mm so any power made from it will prob b torque b/c the stoke and low rpm's the engine turns. so hp will b hard but im willing to bet 210hp and 370ftlb/tq will take a lil time but deff a realistic goal.

are the JET chips and programers that i see actually work on the 4.0l?

Don't bother with the tuners. They don't give you the power that they claim. The power your looking for is easy to get with a stroker engine. Its a 4.2L jeep engine crank and rods. Easiest way.
