Big big difference. The xj was an amc design with solid axles, a JEEP inline 6 (in most). And the most important principle that made jeeps so durable and capable... K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid). I don't need time to tell me that I can't count on an all wheel drive luxury chrysler Minivan as much as we can count on our cherokees and wranglers.

I have to admit, the new GC looks like a minivan to me. And the fact it is really not different than the Dodge version in overall appearance is a pretty damning indictment.

And you do realize that those were still closer to rugged, capable, and less like a luxury minivan than the new grand cherokee right? Even though the only one i spent my money on was a 4.0 and not a 2.8 or 2.5. Though I would take those over a minivan any day when it comes to JEEPING.
You guys are out of control. When ANY of you design or build something better than the new grand cherokee, go ahead and talk **** about what they're building. Considering the state of our economy and the fact that an increasing number of american jobs are being outsourced overseas, you'd figure that more people on this site would be proud of a product that is still built here in the USA. I hope everyone here realizes there is almost no market for a solid axle 4x4 anymore and those few who are in the market are going to buy wranglers. Plain and simple, if Jeep were to build a modern XJ with solid axles it wouldn't sell, and some foreign company would happily build a product to take the position the new GC currently occupies.
That is all, anything else I have to say would get me in trouble.

Lol, wow, someone is starting to sound like cash for clunkers. We got the president posting or what? "Boost the american economy, trade your go anywhere never die vehicle for a superior new jeep minivan!"
Lol, sorry, I'm really not trying to be a jerk, but that really cracked me up.
As far as the off comment post, my computer is only slightly outdated. I built it a few years ago, it's time to build a new one. It's a water cooled e6600 overclocked to 3.2ghz on an evga 780i board with 4 gig of corsair ram, a thermaltake 850 toughpower powersupply, an BFG ocx GTX280, Sound blaster X-fi fata1ity championship edition with 7.1 speakers in a thermaltake armor sli edition case, with two WD 250 gig hard drives in Raid 0 and a 500 gig storage drive. Guess that is pretty close to a commodore 64 huh?
Again, Guys, I'm not trying to be a jerk. But I'm a mechanic, It's what I do for a living. I know how these newer vehicles are built. The new GC is a great vehicle for the wife to take the kids to soccer practice in. And even for the husbands that wanna say "yep, this thing's got a hemi (SRT8)". But to do anything jeep in? nah... it's just a badge. Sorry fellas.
@DestinationXJ - It's not the same designer, that's for sure.

I can't help but laugh at how much butthurt some of you are experiencing because some people aren't fans of the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee. The idea that I have to drink the Jeep kool-aid and mindlessly revere anything that's put out with the name "Jeep" on it is a complete joke.
IMO, the modern Jeep company has lost its way, and Chrysler is mostly cashing in on the brand name to stay afloat. The Compass and the Patriot are two of the worst examples of this in their lineup. Even Chrysler realizes it at this point -- that's why both are being discontinued by 2012.
If you like the new Grand Cherokee, consider buying one. If you don't, don't buy one.
I like rugged, simple vehicles. For me, that's my XJ. You know what complexity brings? More stuff to go wrong as it gets older.

I will drive my XJ !!!!
my wife..... wants the new GC
IMO I like it! its not for me its for her and the 2 little boys in the back!
I would NEVER think about giving up my XJ for it but like others have said there is a market for the new GC and it will sell and keep Jeep alive and sit next to my XJ in the driveway.

Honestly I like it, besides how can you hate if you can get it with a HEMI? Where can you go wrong with jeep ingenuity and a HEMI? And personally i like this sema adition to, the red accents seem alittle out of place but i really like it.

I would never buy one of the new GCs, its just not my type of vehicle. However Chrysler is obviously doing something right if there is so much press about it and people talking about it all over the web. The Compass and Patriot NEVER should have been built or designed. Jeep should've kept it simple; wrangler, Liberty(to replace the XJ) and the GC. The commander is a pretty decent vehicle too, and kinda reminds me of an FSJ.

BTW, Nobody cares about what type of POS computer you have, it was outdated 6 months after you built it.
The main point here is: Regardless of whether you like the new GC or not, its still built here in America, meaning that a good portion of the money spent on one goes back into OUR economy. If you don't like it, get off your ***, go get a job at Chrysler as a design engineer and come up with something better. Till then STFU, and go bash a foreign car maker.
