As soon as Chrysler took over Jeep, the emphasis on creature comforts at the expense of its heritage took over.

I do somewhat agree with this statement. One of the biggest mistakes, was when they started making 2wd Wranglers. However, it's not ONLY Chrysler doing this. People don't want rugged vehicles any more (for the most part, anyway) they want luxury. They're building what people want to buy.

I've seen that please the masses argument too many times. We're not here to please the masses, I guess as the slogan goes "It's a JEEP thing, you wouldn' understand."

Now, it's all focus-grouped, and attempting to get people to buy an "image" instead of a vehicle that's rugged, reliable, and straightforward. I'd take a CJ5 over a Grand Cherokee any day of the week.
Chrysler is humping the corpse of a name -- Jeep -- at this point. The very least we can do is call it out as the necrophilia that it is if we give a damn about the Jeep heritage.

Exactly! They produce what the masses want. If the Patriot were solid axle, i'd have one. But they're not...they're IFS because they "ride better". Is it a load of crap? Yes. Is there anything any of us can do about it? Unfortunately not. So, i'll keep my XJ and be happy!
Its funny, people said the same thing about XJs and ZJs for the longest time but for a different reason That they weren't "Real Jeeps" because they have a unibody. Now people are saying that these aren't "Real Jeeps" because they're luxury, they're IFS and IRS, and all these other things.
I happen to like the new GC, and I think they serve their purpose extremely well.

Chrysler originally wanted to kill the XJ off in the early 90s and just replace the XJ with the ZJ. Instead, when there was blowback, they decided to introduce it alongside the XJ.
The XJ was designed in the late 70s. It completely pre-dates the Chrysler acquisition by nearly 10 years. The fact they were produced until 2001 is testament to the quality of that original design.

However, when the XJ originally came out, people said the same things about it that people are saying about the new Grand Cherokee now. It's not a REAL Jeep because it has a top and a unibody.
Time will tell.
