Side note, should I be happy to find out I have a 8.25 rear axle? Does this mean I have LSD?

Yes you should be happy. LSD 8.25 are very rare so it's doubtful. I have only seen 1.

Well it definitely had the 8.25 when it left the factory 21 years ago, it's on my build sheet. The build sheet doesn't say LSD though, I wasn't sure if the 8.25 always had LSD or if it was optional.

Quick way to find out: jack up the rear end, if tires turn opposite direction then it's open diff.
Non functioning LSD will act like an open dif though.
Only other way is to take the cover off and look for the clutches.

LSD was optional

It's quite obvious that you don't have any clue. By your definitions of a truck, the Comanche isn't a truck, neither is a ranger or an s10.

Actually, mine is an 85 and IS classified as a Station Wagon, not a truck.

I don't think the state knows what these are half the time. Here's how mine are classified by the IL DMV.

1986 XJ Carryall
1986 MJ Pickup
1987 XJ Utility
1987 MJ Truck
1988 XJ Carryall
1992 XJ 4 Wheel Drive
1993 YJ Truck
1997 XJ Carryall
2000 XJ Carryall

No, you'd be seeing ****. You'd know. Maybe.

Oh limited slip? The build sheet will say "Anti-Spin Differential" or "TrackLock". Pretty uncommon.

Station wagon is a car. Lol. You're right though. There were no SUV classifications untill the 90's. (Some of you were just being born at that time.) Up untill then there was Truck, Car or Van. The old CJs were classed as Trucks. The old FSJ Wagoneer was a Truck. The Xj was classed as a Car because of size and weight. (Don't complain because cars are cheaper than trucks on insurance anyways. Lol)

I'm a North Carolina state inspector and it sounds like we have some of the same if not all the same rules applying for inspections. 1993 jeeps did not have third brake lights I own a 1993 with no third brake light and it's the OEM hatch. It's also classified as a station wagon on our North Carolina registration cards. You're vehicle would not of failed down here. Sounds like it should not have failed up there as well. Make the inspector who failed you show you where it says it would fail and tell him yours didn't come with one. Typically if you put up a fight and sound like you know what you're talking about pretty well you will make them question it and look it up. I know for a fact though that my 1993 did not have a third brake light.

I got a reply today from Chrysler's historical department.

"After a search of our archives I am only able to provide partial evidence that your 1993 Cherokee was not equipped with a high-mount center stop light. We do not have any documentation that there was a certain day that these lights started being installed. I can tell you:

- By federal law, all passenger cars had to be equipped with a high-mount center brake light for the 1986 model year. This law was applied to light duty trucks, such as your Cherokee, beginning in 1994.
- The 1993 Cherokee service manual does not mention a high-mount center brake light.
- The 1994 Cherokee service manual does have a section regarding the type of bulb used in the high-mount center brake light and how to replace it. This is also spelled out in the wiring diagram.
- The 1993 Cherokee owner's manual does not mention the high-mount center brake light.
- The 1994 Cherokee owner's manual does have a section on the type of bulb used in the high-mounted center brake light and how to replace it.
- The 1993 Cherokee sales brochure does not have any images with the high-mounted center brake lights.
- There are images in the 1994 Cherokee sales brochure that show the Cherokee with a high-mounted center brake light.

I hope that this information is helpful. Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards,

Brandt Rosenbusch
Manager - Historical Services
Chrys;er Group LLC"

Not 100% but all evidence available points to no 3rd brake light on 93 Cherokees. It seems they really wanted to provide me with an exact date that 3rd brake lights started going in.

Side note, I like that I had to contact some guy directly at "historical services" for my jeep and that jeep was so quick and easy to forward me to the right person.
