i Purchased a 99 Jeep grand cherokee laredo last week. the car ran great untill i went to the movies with my wife and when i put the car in reverse it made a loud thump and jerked the car down... when i put it back in drive the car came back up i did it a few more times with the same result. I took the car back to the dealership since its under warranty. Now my question is this the mechanic they took it too sais its the transfer case which will cost about 400 to repair. Now i was thinking its the transmission because it only happens when u put the car in reverse. I was told the transfer case was for th 4x4. I feel like the dealership doesnt want to spent much money on the repair and are settling for the transfer case instead of fixing the transmission. What do you guys think? do you guys think its possible that its the transmission and not the transfer case. The owner of the dealership told me that if it was the transmission he would loose the profit he made on that jeep and then some. I just want to have a perfectly running jeep. I wouldnt want them to return the car to me if its not fixed in reality. The car is a 99 with only 90k miles. The car shifts smoothly and switches gears flawlessly no knocks or thuds only when you put the car in reverse. Please help if you guys are familiar with this situation thanks alot cheers.

 

 

1. You should post this in the Grad cherokee tech section, you'd get more attention.

2. It could be the transfer case cuz the transfer case is hooked directly to the transmission. I'm no mechanic, but its possible that your tcase doesn't like going in reverse for some reason.
