Not a bad idea. But about the roof rack making a rig more tippy, I really don't believe that. I never had one, but they are not that heavy to play a factor. The only problem I see with them is getting hung up on trees and other overhead stuff on the trail.

I'm with nukin on the wood thing tho, May work for now, but an XJ goes forever, so the wood is going to rot. Steel would be ideal.

Not saying it is a bad idea, just don't think wood is up to it.

If the roof makes it any tippier, then surely a bit of positive wheel spacing will counter it

Do you like the welder you got? I'm looking to get a welder and I was thinking about getting one from harbor freight but I haven't heard any reviews on them.

I beg to differ.

On the roof it does make your COG a little off, but not enough to stress over it and what kind of tire carrier did you have that would make you hang up on an exit? Last time I checked they are above the bumper so...

It's good for small projects, but I haven't decided yet if it can handle something like a bumper or step bars. I'm new to welding so if anyone knows feel free to tell me

I plan on making one of wood as well... however with enough support underneath I think it will hold up fine. If the wood in the back rots you are spending too much time under water. If you plan on change the design, I would suggest making the spare accessible without having to take the whole "rack" out.. Just an idea. Good start though. Also you might look at securing the rack to the floor and to put tie downs on top of the rack. Would suck to have everything on top of and below coming at you in an accident.

Heres my design, made of 3/4" mdf. The bottom is a draw slide and the top is my current sub box

This was the first design but I took out the 1x2s for a solid vertical support out of 1"mdf
