MPG taking a hit?
Hey guys,
I'm considering purchasing an xj for my DD. I know they don't have the greatest mpg but that's how much I love xj's. The only mods I want to do are a 2" budget lift, slightly larger tires, new steel rims, and a new muffler. How big of an impact on mpg do you think these mods will make?

Ya. I agree. That's what I have got on both of mine, but I drive very conservatively. There are some things that can slightly improve mpg (somewhat debatable) I noticed improvements after less restrictive intake and exhaust. Just buy one, its rougher at the pump but I guarantee you won't regret it.

I got 3 inch lift, 31s with stock alloy rims, flowmaster super 40, cowl intake, and a hi-flow cat... and only get 12 mpg every tank. Highway and city mixed.
I dunno if something wrong or what.
But I know steel rims add a good amount of weight and can drop some mpg. My complete stock XJ got 16.
Too be honest, you're gonna havta get used to bad mpg with an xj. It's inevitable. Cause theyre a brick on wheels...or you will keep thinking...hmmm maybe just one more upgrade, maybe one more inch, maybe alittle beefier tires. It's the XJ curse!

With my 6.5 inch lift and 33" tires with steel wheels, I get 16 mpg highway and 14-15 stop and go traffic.
That being said... you would get between 16-20.
I would recommend aluminum wheels if you can find them. They're lighter than steel and will help with mpg.

The key thing to do is make your rig as near factory-fresh as possible. Keep on top of maintenance and don't cheap out on parts when it comes to replacing something that's even slightly worn. With all that in place, even something like a lift won't become a burden at the pump.
