Ive got a 97 with five speed, how in the $%* do i remove the shifter handle?

two pipe wrenches, i dont know any tricks but, on my 88, id ask how to keep it on...

On my '89, and actually every other manual car I've ever owned or driven, it just unscrews. Like a nut. Just twist to the left. Lefty loosey, righty tighty. Easy stuff man.

If its a cheap aftermarket **** you can untwist the bottom and its held in place by 3, 3/32 set screws. If not get a set of channel locks and go to town

FWIW The stock shift **** on my TJ had a nut under the shiftpattern , I used a small screwdriver to pry off the shift pattern button then took a Deepwell socket to remove the nut an the shift **** came right off . My TJ had an AX15 also
