Max mileage to consider when buying a used XJ?
Hi folks,
Still in the search for a good used XJ in the Seattle area... my original search parameters were 97-98-99, stock, less than 90k miles, less than $5k. This combination doesn't seem to appear very often... dealers around here will try and get more than $7k for a 99 Classic with over 150k miles on it, which seems a bit much. There was a 99 with less than 60k miles on it at a dealer for $8.7k, but I didn't think I could talk them down more than $2k which made it out of my price range.
Anyhow, I'm thinking I may need to be willing to look at higher mileages if I'm going to find one sometime soon (which I'd like to do, since my last car was totaled out with front and rear damage from being rear-ended at a stop light three weeks ago, and while I walk to school, I don't want to have to keep borrowing my gf's car for other stuff). What are some typical mileages for important/expensive failures, and what's the highest mileage you would consider buying if the intended use was as a DD with occasional, mild trails for the next four to six years? I'm willing to do a lot of my own work, but don't really want to do an engine rebuild or swap within six months of buying.
Thanks!
Andy

12,000 miles per year as a baseline estimate or reasonable mileage, IMO. People talk of stuff starting to wear out in the 140k range, but overall these beasts are tanks.

Thats kind of a loaded question on this board since there are a lot of guys reporting mileage over 300k. I purchased mine at around 140k and a year later I have 150k. It does seem that sensors and other parts seem to fail around this point. My goal is to put another 100k on this rig and at this rate I should be driving it for another 7 years at least. I see that as a pretty good investment of $3500 up front and some normal maintenance and parts replacement through the years. When its time to move on I will have a really hard time letting it go. I love this rig more than any other I have owned.

I got my '91 limited 2 1/2 years ago. At 64,000 miles. At that time KBB had at valued at $2500. (And only because it's a limited) Maybe start looking for older years. Or for specificly lower mileage. Mine just turned twenty years old, and now at 70,600 miles. I plan on keeping it a long, long time. It's nice not to have car payments. Attachment 37293

Mileage isn't as important as how it was taken care of. Find one that you can tell it was taken care of and it will run forever. On the other hand, find one that was abused with 80K on it and it will be nothing but trouble. Have a friend that bought a 99 with 110k on it and he has had nothing but problems becuase it wasn't teken care of, he has has head gasket, oil leaks, trans problems. My son's has 274k on it and it just keeps running

i bought mine at 152k miles, engine is solid and smooth. Just make sure the Jeep was maintained properly by checking all the fluids, look for rust, and look over the suspension components for wear. These trucks can last forever (as with most cars/trucks as long as you maintain them).
