Hey Brian, Welcome to CF. I'd look for an '02-'04 model so as to avoid the oiling issues of the first models.
If you want more power, the 4.7 HO is what you want, but even the standard 4.7 is a nice engine. I have that in my '04. It gets nearly identical mileage to my brothers '04 WJ with the 4.0L I-6, thanks to it's 5 spd OD auto trans. The 6 only has a 4 spd OD auto.
If you get the Quadra-Drive system it offers Vari-Lok front and rear axles. If you want the option of using 2WD, look for the Selec-Trac system. This explains the different 4X4 systems offered in the WJ. >http://www.wjjeeps.com/tcases.htm
Look for rust in the rockers and in the dogleg behind the rear door under the trim overlay on the Laredo's.
Watch out for inop fans on the heater/AC. Some tend to melt the connector. >http://www.wjjeeps.com/blower_motor.htm

I have seen a lot of the early ones of that body style have engine problems the later years like said seem to be better to have. And always have a mechanic look over anything before buying it,Your looking 100 bucks or more but its well worth it to know a head if your buying something nice or a total pile of crap. And make sure they do a compression test it will tell if the engine is wore or had problems not known yet.
