Default Looking for my first Jeep

Hi, I am from Southern Indiana looking to buy my first Jeep. My budget is limited. From what I read so far on here it looks like a 96-99 Cherokee Sport would be my best choice as i have read on here the 2000 and later have heads that are more likely to crack. The Jeep will mostly be used for local/city short drives of less than 20 miles with occasional 2-3 times a year longer trips. Would like to get 18/20 mpg on my local/city driving. Maybe a few off road camping, picnic, fishing. etc. All suggestions are welcome. Need all the i can get.

Well looks like you will obviously be looking for stock Cherokees . But what's your price range? I'm on the east side and can keep an eye out for ya! ;-)

There are all in my price range. I can go to about $3000.00 but would rather pay a little less so i have room for repairs if needed. I kinda like the looks of the 98 you found. The 99 said V6. I did not know they made a V6? Not sure about the 95 as i seen somewhere on here that they made some improvements in 96 up to 99.

Thanks for help. If you find anymore let me know.

I think one issue you'll experience is the gas mileage. 18-20 is more along the lines of highway mileage for XJs, decently maintained ones at that.

I'm in Houston and found my 2001 XJ 4x4 with 145K miles on it for $2700, it was hard to find and took a while, but it was worth the wait
